GENERAL QUESTIONS

Certainly. Replacing all the windows and doors in your home with high energy-efficient products, when properly sealed and installed, can potentially decrease your energy bill by up to 16%.

Replacing your original windows and doors with modern energy-efficient alternatives promises significant improvements. These upgraded options boast superior airtightness and incorporate advanced features such as low-emissivity (low-E) glass, enhanced hardware design, and inert gas filling between the panes.

If your doors and windows are older than 20 years, you can expect a definite improvement. New doors and windows can help keep your home cooler in the summer, reduce dryness in the winter, and eliminate uncomfortable drafts.

Identifying energy-efficient doors and windows is straightforward. Just look for the Energy Star® symbol and label. This certification ensures that the product meets rigorous technical standards.

The Energy Star® symbol and label indicate that a product has been assessed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and meets the criteria outlined in their Energy Star® program. Products that receive certification rank within the top 15 to 30 percent of their category for energy efficiency. It’s advisable to purchase only doors and windows with Energy Star® certification as they are eco-friendly and offer potential cost savings.

Indeed, vinyl windows enjoy widespread popularity due to their numerous advantages. They boast energy efficiency and remarkable durability, and they are cost-effective while requiring minimal maintenance since they do not need to be repainted or stained.

Based on Energy Star ratings, the most energy-efficient window frame is a vinyl frame with welded fused corners. For windows with multiple panels, wider frames are more energy-efficient as they offer increased strength and allow the glass to sit closer to the wall. Additionally, opting for a one-piece frame minimizes air leakage. Frames comprised of multiple pieces that are glued or screwed together tend to be less energy-efficient.

ABOUT OUR WINDOWS

Low-e glass, or low emissivity glass, features a thin metallic coating on its inner surface that reflects the sun’s rays and reduces harmful UV rays. This coating is designed to minimize the transmission of ultraviolet and infrared light through the glass while still allowing visible light to pass through. Learn more about low-e glass, here. Argon, an affordable, safe, and odorless gas, enhances a window’s efficiency by approximately 10%. Being denser than air, it elevates R-values and reduces heat transfer through windows. Commonly employed in residential windows, it insulates the glass by preventing heat loss, frost buildup and enhances soundproofing.

The U-value measures the rate of heat transfer through a material or assembly. It indicates how well a window, door, or other building component insulates against heat loss. A lower U-value signifies better insulation and reduced heat transfer, making it an important factor in assessing energy efficiency.

The R-value measures the resistance of a material to heat flow. It indicates how well an insulating material, such as insulation or a window, can resist heat transfer. A higher R-value indicates better insulation properties, as it means the material is more effective at reducing heat flow.

Grilles, commonly known as window grids, can but generally do not have a substantial impact on the R-value of windows. While they add an additional layer to the window, they are typically made of lightweight materials like aluminum or vinyl, which minimally affect insulation.

GREENER HOMES INITIATIVE

The Canada Greener Homes Initiative is a government program aimed at providing financial support to homeowners for making energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. Currently, the Canada Greener Homes Loan is the only program offered through this initiative.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan is a government program designed to help homeowners finance the replacement of their windows and doors with energy-efficient alternatives. Through this initiative, homeowners can access interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to cover the expenses associated with upgrading their windows and doors to more energy-efficient options. The loans can be repaid over a period of up to 10 years, making it easier for homeowners to invest in making their homes more energy-efficient.For more information, click here.

An energy advisor will assess your home and provide recommendations on enhancing its energy efficiency and resilience to climate change. Only retrofits deemed eligible by an energy advisor are qualified for the loan.

Ontarians can access a list of approved Energy Advisors on the Enbridge Gas website. If you cannot find a licensed Energy Advisor, we can help connect you with one.

Energy audits, both before and after the retrofits, are required for loan eligibility. If your retrofit has started without a pre-evaluation, your renovation does not qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Loan.

No, glass-only replacements or sash replacements for windows, or door slab or insert replacements for doors without frame replacements, are not eligible for the loan.

All products must be both purchased and manufactured within Canada.

Eligible products must have an ENERGY STAR rating. Our windows are manufactured in Ontario and meet all the requirements for the loan.

Energy Star labels must remain on the windows and doors until the final energy audit is completed. If any labels are lost after installation, please contact us [link to contact page] for replacements.
